Well, he's not actually MY Uncle Eddy but that is what he's currently known as around our house. Of course, before he was Uncle Eddy he was just Ed. And, today is his birthday.
Ed is my first brother-in-law and has held the role quite well over the years. I remember when Hubby and I were first engaged he welcomed me to the family and told me he understood it can be difficult to come into a family unit and if I ever needed someone to talk to or if I had questions about the family I could ask him. He was also the one who familiarized me with the area. The summer I lived here, without my dear hubby, for an internship, Ed told me that Maple St is what defines north and south for all north/south running streets. A small bit of info that proved quite useful to this small(er) town girl. However, my very favorite Ed memory is about 5 years old. The family was traveling to Salina to celebrate Mom's birthday. She had rented a minivan and all the grown kids and grandkids at the time were scrunched into those seven seats. Lying on the floor of the van, Ed was trying out new headphones. Apparently he was enjoying a Lionel Richie song because a few seconds into the test run we all hear Ed declare, in that too-loud-for-normal-conversation-tone-of-voice that people have when wearing headphones, "mmmm, I love me some Lionel Richie in the morning." And, he did, too. His eyes were closed, lost in Lionel Richie easy listening smoothness and he was clueless to the giggles throughout the van. I laughed so hard I cried.
Thank you Ed for being kind and genuine, for documenting our family memories with such care and for giving me the giggles every time a hear a Lionel Richie song for the rest of my life.
Happy Birthday Uncle, Brother-in-Law, Brother Ed
We Love You
